Enter the values from your food label. The calculator shows carbohydrates and net carbs per 100 g or per serving, for labels from the UK, the EU and the US. Explained below: How the calculator works · UK, EU or US label · What we subtract · Questions · Related · Sources

Values from your food label
What does the carbohydrate value include?
Help with the label

On UK and EU labels, fibre is not included in “Carbohydrate”; if the label lists fibre, it has a line of its own. US labels show “Total Carbohydrate” with “Dietary Fiber” indented below it: there, fibre is included. Never subtract fibre twice.

The values are

With a serving size, the calculator shows the values per 100 g and per serving.

The “Dietary Fiber” line of a US label. For UK and EU labels and for “Not sure”, the field stays locked.

Help with erythritol

UK and EU nutrition tables show at most “of which polyols”: all polyols together, glycerol included; there is no line of its own for erythritol. Enter the “of which polyols” value only if the ingredients list names erythritol as the only polyol. If the ingredients list also names maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, isomalt, lactitol, mannitol or glycerol (E 420, E 421, E 422, E 953, E 964 to E 967), enter 0: then all polyols stay in the calculation. If you are not sure, leave 0, and nothing is subtracted. On US labels, sugar alcohols, if listed, appear as “Sugar Alcohol”; “Erythritol” can only appear on its own if erythritol is the only sugar alcohol. Here, too, enter the value only if the ingredients list names erythritol as the only sugar alcohol.

No result yet.

Net carbs = carbohydrates as shown on UK and EU food labels (fibre already excluded) minus erythritol. More on this

How the calculator works

The calculator uses the same rule as the nutrition tables on our recipe pages (How we calculate nutrition values):

The calculator does not subtract other polyols such as maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol or isomalt. For UK and EU labels it does not subtract fibre, because fibre is already left out of the carbohydrates there. The result is never below 0: if erythritol exceeds the carbohydrates, or if fibre and erythritol together exceed Total Carbohydrate on a US label, the calculator shows a note instead of a number. Per 100 g, no value above 100 g is possible.

Rounding

The calculator works with your entries exactly as you type them. Only the result is rounded, as on our recipe pages, following the European Commission guidance on tolerances for nutrition labelling (December 2012): from 10 g to whole grams, below that to 0.1 g; up to 0.5 g it shows “0 g”. When the calculator converts to the serving or to 100 g, it uses the unrounded values. The values on the label are rounded themselves, and in the EU, under the same guidance, they may differ from the actual content within limits. The result is therefore only as precise as the label.

UK, EU or US label?

On UK and EU labels, the line is called “Carbohydrate”. Fibre is not included in it; if the label lists fibre, it has a line of its own. Polyols appear at most as “of which polyols”, all of them together (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, Annex I No. 1, 7 and 12, Article 30(2) and Annex XV).

On US labels, the line is called “Total Carbohydrate”. Below it, indented, is “Dietary Fiber”: fibre is included in Total Carbohydrate. Total Carbohydrate is calculated there as a difference: everything that is not protein, fat, water or ash. After subtracting fibre, the result can therefore exceed the UK or EU value for the same food, for example because of organic acids. Sugar alcohols, if listed, appear as “Sugar Alcohol”; “Erythritol” can only appear on its own if erythritol is the only sugar alcohol (21 CFR 101.9(c)(6)).

Never subtract fibre twice. If you take the fibre off a UK or EU value again, the result is too low. How we convert US values for our recipes is explained on How we calculate nutrition values.

What we subtract and what we don’t

The calculator only subtracts erythritol, and only the amount you enter. Other polyols such as maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol or isomalt stay in the carbohydrates. This is a decision by Easy Keto. The net carbs on our recipe pages follow the same rule.

For comparison: when calculating kcal, UK and EU labelling counts erythritol at 0 kcal per gram and the other polyols at 2.4 kcal per gram (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, Annex XIV).

Only enter erythritol if the ingredients list names it as the only polyol. If a UK or EU label says “Carbohydrate 55 g, of which polyols 40 g” and the ingredients list names maltitol, enter 0 for erythritol. The result is then 55 g of net carbs. Entering the 40 g as erythritol would give 15 g.

Other methods

Net carbs are not part of the nutrition declaration on UK and EU labels, and the US rules for the Nutrition Facts label (21 CFR 101.9) do not define the term either. There are several methods. Some online calculators subtract half of all sugar alcohols: with 20 g of carbohydrates, 8 g of which are maltitol, that gives 16 g. This calculator stays at 20 g, because it does not subtract maltitol. Different calculators can therefore show different results for the same label.

Note on polyols

Under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 (Annex III point 2.4), a food with over 10% added polyols must carry the statement “Excessive consumption may produce laxative effects.” The 10% applies to all added polyols together. The calculator only knows the erythritol you enter, and shows the sentence from 10 g of erythritol per serving or above 10 g of erythritol per 100 g, also when it converts the value using the serving size.

Questions and answers

Should I subtract fibre on a UK label?

No. On UK and EU labels, fibre is already left out of “Carbohydrate”. Choose “The value does not include fibre”; the fibre field then stays locked.

My US pack already shows “net carbs”. Can I use that number?

Neither the UK and EU labelling rules nor the US rules for the Nutrition Facts label define net carbs, so a number printed on a pack may be calculated differently from this calculator. Enter Total Carbohydrate, Dietary Fiber and, if it applies, erythritol, and the calculator works it out by the rule on this page.

Does the calculator give daily amounts?

This page gives no daily amounts. How many carbohydrates suit you is something to discuss with your doctor or a dietitian.

Why are there no net carbs for “Not sure”?

Because the value may or may not include fibre. We only work out net carbs once it is clear what the value counts. Our method says the same.

What do I do with values per serving?

Choose “per serving”. Enter the serving size in grams if you also want to see the values per 100 g. The calculator converts the unrounded values and only rounds the result.

Why does the calculator show two numbers?

Net carbs do not appear on UK and EU nutrition labels. The calculator takes the carbohydrates from the label and subtracts erythritol, for US labels the fibre first. That is why it shows carbohydrates and net carbs together.
